[ALLY] Tuxedo Mask.

During Sailor Moon’s first fight in episode 1, a stranger named Tuxedo Mask saved her from the youma. He was dressed in a full tuxedo with a sweeping cape and a white eye mask over his eyes. He encouraged Moon to defeat the youma. Soon after, he disappeared into the night.

He would show up again on multiple occasions to help the senshi. Usagi had a crush on him, but didn’t know he was actually Mamoru Chiba. And he was someone Usagi disliked in real life.

At first, Mamoru was turning into Tuxedo Mask against his will. In episode 22, he dreamt of a girl (who looked like Usagi) telling him to find the Silver Crystal. Once the Dark Kingdom searched for the seven Rainbow Crystals, able to form the aforementioned object, Tuxedo Mask became more prominent in episodes. He interfered with both the senshi and Zoisite’s plans when a Rainbow Crystal was exposed. He went after the items, hoping that they would give him answers to what was happening to him. After getting a crystal in episode 26, Mamoru learned that he was indeed Tuxedo Mask.

The other senshi didn’t trust Tuxedo Mask since he was after the Silver Crystal. Kunzite trapped the four senshi in episode 33 while Zoisite lured Mask into a trap. He blew his eye mask off and Beryl saw Mamoru’s face through her crystal ball. She immediately ordered her minions to retreat.

Zoisite invited Mamoru to Star Light Tower. Usagi followed Mamoru when she spotted his shoulder injury (from his fight with Zoisite). The two were kidnapped and brought to the location. Usagi had to reveal her identity to save her and Mamoru from Zoisite’s fireball. Mamoru did the same, and was going to fight Zoisite for all of the Rainbow Crystals. Instead, Zoisite attacked Sailor Moon from behind with an ice spear. Tuxedo Mask shielded her and was severely wounded. Beryl took him away for her own reasons. Sailor Moon was heartbroken over losing Tuxedo Mask, or rather Mamoru, the man she loved. And with the Silver Crystal reformed, her memories of her and Mamoru’s past lives returned. They were lovers long ago, and were split up by dark forces.

Queen Beryl had Queen Metalia infuse Mamoru’s weak body with evil influence. Beryl was in love with Mamoru’s past self, Prince Endymion, and thought brainwashing him would make him lover her. Now serving the Dark Kingdom, Tuxedo Mask looked for the Silver Crystal. Metalia’s magic erased his memory of Sailor Moon’s civilian identity so he didn’t know that she had the jewel.

After Sailor Mercury foiled Mask’s plans to summon the fallen Great Youma, Sailor Moon tried to purify Mamoru with the Silver Crystal. She succeeded, but he was teleported back to Beryl.

The senshi learned that Prince Endymion was from Earth, as was Beryl, and had fallen in love with Princess Serenity of the Silver Millennium. The moon’s Queen Serenity sent everyone, including her daughter and Endymion, to the future after she sealed off the Dark Kingdom. Mamoru was reborn in the present day along with the senshi.

Beryl brought Sailor Moon to her lair in episode 46. Endymion had been revived, and he was ordered to torture her. Moon showed him the star shaped music box, the orgel, that Mask dropped in episode 26. It was gift between Serenity and Endymion. Upon touching it, all evil was extracted from Mamoru. He then died while protecting Sailor Moon from Queen Beryl.

With the Dark Kingdom gone, the senshi and Mamoru were reincarnated again as normal humans. Their lives picked up where they left off and without any recollection of the battle. New villains showed up, and the senshi acquired another masked hero - Moonlight Knight. This was Mamoru’s subconscious in corporeal form. He wanted to help Sailor Moon, but he physically couldn’t until his memories came back. When the trouble subsided, Moonlight Knight was withdrawn into Mamoru’s mind.

In the future, Tuxedo Mask was seemingly retired and Mamoru became King Endymion. He was also the father of Chibiusa, his and Usagi’s daughter from the 30th Century.

In SuperS, Nehelenia’s terror swept over the planet. Mamoru felt ill because he was linked to the Earth. The Dead Moon Circus’ queen was released in Sailor Stars, and she targeted Mamoru. She placed him under her thrall and brought him to her nightmare world. The senshi went to rescue him. If they didn’t, Chibiusa would have disappeared from existence.

Mamoru left for America shortly after Nehelenia was dealt with. During his flight, Sailor Galaxia took his star seed. He died without it and Usagi never knew until near the end of the anime. With the Sailor War over, Mamoru was brought back to life.

In the anime and manga, he was called “Tuxedo Kamen”. “Kamen” can translate to “mask”. Unlike the senshi, Mask had no official attacks. He utilized roses in various ways and fought with a cane. In the manga, he possessed some offensive powers.

Because he was from Earth in his old life, many fans regard Mamoru as the senshi (or guardian) of Earth.
